What We Believe

Decades of professional experience, and thousands of client engagements has led to the development of core beliefs, principles, and ethics. We believe they make us different and demand high standards.

1. We answer to you, and no one else.

2. The plan comes first—and every plan is custom.

Tartan Road was built around a set of convictions—about money, about markets, and about how a firm should treat the people it serves.  They shape everything we do.  Here is where we stand.

What We Believe

Tartan Road is an independent registered investment adviser.  We are not owned by a bank, an insurance company, or a private-equity firm, and we do not sell proprietary products.  That independence means we can truly live up to the fiduciary standard building plans and portfolios that prioritize your interests—not corporate profits or interests.

Good financial planning can be thought of as answering four essential questions for your family:  How much money do you need?  When will you need it?   Where will it come from?  What could go wrong?  The concepts are simple, but in the modern financial world getting good answers can be a challenge.  It takes time, judgement, and real work—but when guided by an expert the work pays off with a clear personalized roadmap to your objectives.  That plan includes clear goals stated in financial terms, ordered priorities that reflect your values, a comprehensive view of your net worth, an investment management strategy, risk management assessment, and estate planning tactics. But the plan will not serve its purpose without disciplined implementation, so our services include getting solutions in place and ongoing management.

3.  We invest with discipline, not dogma.

Markets and economies are complex, adaptive systems—by their nature unpredictable.  So we do not try to predict them; we prepare.  We build plans to maximize the probability of success and maintain proven disciplines. Patience is the quiet advantage of the best investors.  We use a broad array of asset classes to build institutional quality portfolios. Beyond stocks and bonds, we consider real assets, private markets, and tax efficient structures to improve results. We consider your complete financial picture in allocation decisions:  retirement accounts, brokerage assets, private holdings, business interests, all of it as one portrait rather than disconnected silos. We focus on the details such as tax efficiency, asset location, rebalancing, and manager selection. Dogmatic investing in a rapidly changing world is ill-advised, so we hold our views loosely, changing our minds when the evidence demands it.

4.  Humility is the most important trait an advisor can have.

All investing is a set of predictions about an uncertain future, which means certainty is a sign of intellectual weakness, not strength. We look at probabilities and consider the consequences of risk on your behalf. Curiosity, open-minded learning, and exploration, when grounded in first principles and high standards, lead to continuous progress. You should expect us to be professionals deeply knowledgeable and skilled in our craft. But you should also expect us to be honest about what we can and cannot know about all the potential variables and their influence on planning and investing.

5. The numbers are human.

Most financial mistakes do not come from analytical miscalculation—they come from innate human nature; fear, greed, envy, FOMO. Clarity and a sound plan are the antidote.  We believe the best advisors pair real technical investment expertise with empathy and broad client experience. The study of behavioral economics and the human side of markets is as critical as any financial analysis.  We find a family's financial reality often differs from how they feel about it or describe it. Part of our job is to help you close that gap with insights, tactics, and tools.

6. We aim for radical transparency.

Healthy advisory relationships are built on complete transparency—so that is the standard we hold ourselves to.  No fog around fees.  You should know what you pay and what you pay for. No mystery about why a decision was made, what is working and what is not, or where our motivations lie.   No questions are out of bounds.

7. Ethical Framework and Vitue Capitalism

Our professional conduct is governed by the fiduciary standard. Our client and professional relationships are governed by the golden rule. Our work ethic is that of dedicated craftsman who take pride in the service we provide. We believe Tartan Road Wealth Advisory exists to serve all of its stakeholders—clients, employees, owners, the network of business partners, and the community around us. When all stakeholders get real value in exchange for their contributions, the firm grows and prospers as a natural result.  That means clients receive expert advice built around their needs; team members find satisfying work and substantive compensation; owners earn a fair return for the risk and responsibility they carry; our partners grow with us, and the community we live in benefits from our being part of it.  We call this Virtue Capitalism.

We treat your privacy and security as essential, not optional—a commitment that only grows as cyber threats do.  And we adopt new technology, including AI, thoughtfully; as tools to do better work for you, never as a substitute for judgment.
